Transportation adapts to change

Transportation and logistics have always been around—from the time Christopher Columbus made his voyage to the New World. While Christopher Columbus and most people and in the past relied on shipping as a way to get goods transported from one part of the world to the other,  today, technology has allowed people and corporations to conduct business more efficiently and through new mediums such as air, rail, and trucking.

Michael Last, Spectrum Logistics’ Director of Supply Chain Solutions, has been in the transportation and logistics industry since 1971. Last explains “Communication has changed the industry the most. We used to have to communicate through mail and phone, however, in today’s world everything is virtually done by email. Skype makes it easier and seamless to do business with customers overseas.” Typically in the United States, businesses have been focused on the domestic transportation market, and now that corporations are expanding in the global marketplace, it’s a whole new experience for them.

As we come out of the recession and look into the future, transportation and logistics continues to grow and change. With the Panama Canal Expansion to be completed in 2014 and new sustainability initiatives, the industry will be facing many changes. As a result, leaders will need to assess their operations and adapt them for change.

Here at Spectrum Logistics, one change our company has encountered is the use of social media. Recently, we set-up a Twitter account and Facebook account so that we can communicate externally with our customers on a day to day basis. John Emery, President of Spectrum Logistics, says, “Transparency is critical for a company in the age of social media. We want our customers to provide us with feedback and to share major developments that are going on in our industry.” People expect companies to have an online presence, and that may be a challenge for some companies. Looking toward the future, Spectrum is gearing up for internet marketing and is willing to accept the challenges posed by new developments in technology and in the industry. We encourage Spectrum customers and fans to follow us on twitter and like us on Facebook!
